There is no need to be completely stunned into sheer panic if you wake up to a smoke alarm to find your house on fire or come home to find it burned down. Yes, you will probably be suprised. But you don't need to become frantic and nonsensical about the situation. Why? Because everyone already knows that sometimes houses catch fire. Therefore it's a foreseeable incident that you can take a little effort in preparing for in case it ever happens. For example, if you have to either wait for the fire department to rescue you from a second or third story window or jump, that's a choice you made before the fire occurred. You could have a ladder or a variety of other options (don't slide down a rope without gloves) if you prepare ahead of time. Escape is just one part. Where are you going to sleep/live now? How are you going to pay to rebuild? These questions, and more, can (and should) be answered well before an incident happens. The same goes for floods, blizzards, power outages, water outages, nuclear power plant emergencies, and so on. Failure to plan is planning to fail. Life is harder on you if you're stupid.
